Great news, to have Sam back is a massive bonus, great young keeper, one of the best we've ever had. Not sure how Dowse managed to persuade everyone that we are a better bet than Watford U23's, but what the …..

ALSO, just heard from a Portsmouth friend of mine, who witnessed their pre-season friendly at Newport IOW that they won 8-0 ; Nicke Kabamba scored FIVE goals and Jamal only two. Although not playing for Portsmouth's real first team squad that's not a bad evening's work for the big lad!
Seems that Nicke's showing his new manager (Kenny Jackett) that he might do better for his club by staying at Pompey and being part of the first team squad, than possibly being 'loaned out' elsewhere! Good news for us if we have generous 'add-ons in his original contract for numbers of appearances, goals scored etc, but not if we want to have him on loan at any time.
Great to see them both still doing well !!

Fantastic news. Best goalkeeper we have had since Joe Andrews IMO.

Really HM? Joe Andrews was before my time... better than Matt Lovett?

Mmm Legend Joe Andrews caught crosses for fun. Gave all the defence confidence with Joe behind you.

  5. I saw the vast majority of Joe Andrews games for us. He was a very good keeper and installed great confidence behind a very sound defense in what was a very successful team.
Perhaps it is difficult to compare players from different times as the rules as to how a keeper can play have been altered substantially.

  6. I've never seen Joe Andrews play, but agree 100% rules/duties for keepers have changed! Very F*cking made up with Sam coming back on loan

Very true about comparing keepers from different times. In Joe's time he had to be physically strong and very aware of the possibility/probability of being bundled/smashed into the net by aggressive forwards and centre backs. Served him right really for 'Actually catching the ball' and holding on to it, instead of randomly punching it away like todays goalies do, even when not under any pressure at all.
These days keepers are almost totally protected by the refs! Last year there were a few ridiculous decisions given when defenders bumped into their own keeper and he gets a free kick. Modern keepers don't seem to be quite as busy at certain times. They don't having to collect dozens of back passes, (at times even from the half way line when their side was in the lead) and don't bounce the ball as many times as they like as they run round their goal area, until a forward charges into them that is!
Present day keepers look athletic, at least six feet tall, weigh less than 15 st. and are always shouting at their defenders, not like the quiet one at the back in the good old days.

Well, I am very surprised to hear that. Wouldn't have thought he was anywhere near that standard but good luck to him.

  12. Agree it is a big step up, but then he is still young, physically looks strong which may help in the rigorous of league football should he progress.
As for the step up, the names of Tony Brook, Vinnie Jones and Stuart Pearce spring to mind, so good luck to him.

But is it really a step up? It says he's signed for the u21 team. How good is the u21 league? I'm not sure its much better than Ryman/Conf south level.

In terms of his profile and cv its clearly a step up. But you make a very good point. U21 and/or academy sides are all too often about neat, thoughtful, slightly anaemic football, putting into practice what has been coached. This is why we see so many young players loaned out to clubs at our level, so they can get used to playing hard, physically tough games against experienced senior players, where the results actually matter.

Joe Turner leaves K's according to his Twitter. No news on his destination.

  16. Reading the club's statement they don't seem too pleased! He agreed a contract, could not sign due to international clearance and then said he no longer wished to play for the club. As Adam said, his destination is unknown.
Would be slightly surprised if he turned up at Beveree, but who knows!

  17. Their forum continues to link us with him, personally not sure, we are certainly looking to add to the squad, but not sure if he plays in the role we are short in.
Time will tell, may get some signing news soon?

I'd be surprised if we did sign him. Interested to see where he goes. He said footballing reasons so that hints at a higher level. But then he'd surely say that. Maybe he's off to Met Police to play with his mate Tom?
